Watford’s return to the Premier League received a major boost on opening day as Xisco’s side squeezed out a 3-2 win over Aston Villa.
There was plenty of talk of how Villa would respond following Jack Grealish’s £100m English record move to Manchester City earlier in the week, but Watford simply had too much fight and quality which secured them a 3-2 victory against Aston Villa.
Ismalia Sarr and debutant Emmanuel Dennis were the keys for the home side as Dennis stabbed home Sarr’s cross for his first goal in the Premier League.
And the pair switched it up before the break as Dennis’ graft on the break paid off for Sarr as the fans favourite stepped inside to blast Watford 2-0 in front.
With an uphill battle in the second half, Villa struggled to make any major inroads.
And with the wind blowing in Watford’s direction, the new kids on block on the grab a cherry on top of the cake, as substitute Cucho Hernandez smashed home a third.
But despite barely having a kick in the first hour in Hertfordshire, Dean Smith’s side did rally in the last 20.
John McGinn rifled home the pass from newly-signed £25m winger Leon Bailey before debutant Danny Ings netted an added time spot kick for the visitors.
But in the end, the hosts had just enough to squeak over the line.
