Leeds legend calls for tighter defence

Matteo, who played for Leeds over 100 times between 2000 and 2004, wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column that despite being excellent at scoring goals, they need to tighten up at the other end.

Leeds have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch this season, scoring 14 goals in eight games so far. But that has came at a cost, with 17 goals being shipped, including four away at Crystal Palace last time out.

The Whites have kept just one clean sheet this season, and Matteo has pointed to Premier League teams knowing how to sneak narrow victories as an explanation for why Leeds find themselves in 15th place.

Marcelo Bielsa’s style of end-to-end football is certainly high risk, but with Patrick Bamford scoring goals freely, is also one of the reasons why Leeds have become many people’s second team this season – something that many would never have thought back when Matteo was playing.

Leeds next face Arsenal at Elland Road this weekend, and will be hoping to get back to winning ways, after the Gunners were humiliated against Aston Villa before the international break.
