Newcastle were quick out of the traps at St. James’, with Wilson and Federico Fernandez both inches away from breaking the deadlock early on.
Those misses did give West Ham some encouragement as the half wore on, with Thomas Soucek heading wide and Pablo Fornals clipping a post.
With the points there for the taking after the break, Newcastle began up the tempo and push for a breakthrough.
Wilson was a thorn in the Hammers side all night, and the new £20m man found himself in the right place at the right time to poke home Hendrick’s flick on 58 minutes.
David Moyes responded by bringing on Andriy Yarmolenko and Sebastian Haller for the final 20 minutes, but the visitors were unable to make any inroads against the Magpies.
And with the Hammers tiring in the closing stages, Hendrick rounded off his own first Magpies appearance with a thunderbolt past Fabianski.
