Hendrick to sign for Newcastle in the coming days

The Magpies are set to bring Jeff Hendrick to St James Park within the next few days.

Hendrick turned down a new contract with Burnley and didn’t appear for them when the league restarted.

The Republic of Ireland international has not played since March though it seems he has been keeping fit thanks to help from his brother who is a strength and conditioning coach.

Hendrick will become the club’s second summer signing after Mark Gillespie, also a free agent, joined the club last month.

Matty Longstaff becomes a free agent

Lets start with a more positive story and wish a very happy birthday to our greatest ever player.

Born on this day in 1970, Alan Shearer still holds that premier league goalscoring record, and hits the big fifty years old today. Happy Birthday Al. We’re pretty sure in this heat you could do without as many candles though…

Back to the current team and Matty Longstaff is now officially a free agent. The 20-year-old’s contract was on a short term extension as it was due to run out before the premier league had restarted.

Longstaff has impressed in his breakthrough season – who can forget that winner on his full debut against Manchester United back in October.

However, contract talks appear to have stalled with the club, and Udinese are rumoured to have offered him higher wages. With Bentaleb now looking unlikely to sign permanently, there should be more game time for him – especially as Bruce does seem to rate him.

We’ll be watching this situation closely and let you know as it develops. In the meantime we’re off for some of that birthday cake.
