Brighton secure vital Premier League draw at Burnley

The Clarets now find themselves six points clear of rivals Fulham, with a point on the board also boosting Brighton’s chances of dodging the drop.

Both sides were restricted to half chances in the early stages in Lancashire, with Ben Mee and James Tarkowski denied by Robert Sanchez, before Pascal Gross lashed a free kick just wide.

But despite Burnley probably edging it before the break, it was the visitors that found themselves in front, as skipper Lewis Dunk powered home Gross’ corner.

However, the determined hosts were not to be forced out of after the restart, with Icelandic star Johan Gudmundsson thumping one past Sanchez.

That strike saw the Burnley confidence come flooding back as the tie tipped in their favour in last 20.

But Brighton stopper Sanchez dug deep for Graham Potter’s side late on as he denied Matej Vydra and Jack Cork.

The Seagulls have looked a different side in 2021 and Leandro Trossard early strike makes it back-to-back defeats for Spurs.

Brighton looked hungry for this from the word go as Pascal Gross deftly clipped against the post.

And the early pressure from the hosts was quickly rewarded after that as Trossard emphatically swept home Gross’ pass.

Potter’s side continued to carry the greater threat before the break as Gareth Bale was forced to clear Lewis Dunk’s smart header.

And with Jose Mourinho’s visitors unable to make any inroads after restart, Ben White forced a vital stop from Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham did almost snatch an underserved equaliser with ten minutes but Robert Sanchez made a sprawling save from Carlos Vinicius before Toby Alderweireld produced a fantastic block to deny Aaron Connolly.
