Steven Gerrard has picked up back-to-back wins as Aston Villa boss as he edged out his old foe Patrick Vieira at Selhurst Park.

Goals from Matt Targett and John McGinn secured three points for Gerrard as the former Liverpool man passed another key test as Villa boss.

Palace did look bright early on as Wilf Zaha lashed one wide before Targett popped up to lash home Ashley Young’s whipped corner.

And with the goal advantage at the break, Villa did look to step on after the restart, as Young’s free kick drifted just over the top.

The visitors were then handed a boost as Douglas Luiz’s red card was overturned by VAR before McGinn wrapped it up with a stunner.

Some lovely stuff from Emi Buendia and Anwar El Ghazi open it for the Scot and he bent an unstoppable effort past Vicente Guaita.

Palace did squeeze out a consolation from Marc Guehi in added time but Gerrard’s men held out for the win.

Full Time from Selhurst Park it’s Crystal Palace 1 Aston Villa 2
