Newcastle were force to settle for a point back at St. James this weekend as James Ward-Prowse’s 96th minute penalty secured a 2-2 draw for Southampton.
Newcastle had looked set for their first win of the campaign, thanks to Allan Saint-Maximin’s late strike, but the ever-steady Ward-Prowse pinched a point for the Southampton.
The visitors did enjoy the better of it before the break on Tyneside as for Magpie Adam Armstrong flashed one just wide from Che Adams forced a smart stop from Freddie Woodman.
But the balance of the tie tipped after the restart as Newcastle showed that missing cutting edge.
Jacob Murphy’s clever knockdown caused panic in the Saints box and Callum Wilson stooped lowest to
nod the hosts in front.
But all credit to Southampton as they bounced back in the closing stages as Mohammed Elyounoussi forced home Nathan Redmond’s cross.
However, just as this one seemed to be drifting off to 1-1 in the closing stages, there to be big drama both ends.
Saint-Maximin smashed home as Southampton again failed to clear their lines inside the box but as Jamal Lewis tangled with Armstrong in the final seconds, Ward-Prowse made no mistake from the spot.
