Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy had a night to forget as Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with victory at St Mary's.
The Gunners went in to their third consecutive away game following back-to-back defeats since the return of the Premier League.
But a goal apiece for Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock earned Mikel Arteta’s side a 2-0 victory over Southampton.
Arsenal’s opener came when there appeared to be no danger for the hosts, as Jan Bednarek rolled a pass back to goalkeeper McCarthy.
But Eddie Nketiah showed the type of desire called for by his manager by chasing it down – his tenacity paid dividends as McCarthy hit his clearance straight at the striker, who was left to roll the ball into an empty net.
Southampton tried to push for an equaliser but it never came and things worsened for Saints as Jack Stephens was shown a red card for bringing down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the Arsenal skipper ran through on goal.
Arsenal’s second and the three points was secured from the resulting free kick – substitute Alexandre Lacazette hitting the wall before his follow up was fumbled by Alex McCarthy, allowing Joe Willock to tuck away his first Premier League goal.
Final score: Southampton 0-2 Arsenal
