Sheffield United picked up their first win under interim boss Paul Heckingbottom as the already relegated Blades won 1-0 at home to Brighton.
United’s Championship return was sealed away at Wolves last weekend but David McGoldrick’s strike means the Seagulls will sweat their own safety.
Brighton did look the sharper of the sides early on as Yves Bissouma’s driving run released Neal Maupay inside the box but Blades Aaron Ramsdale stood big to deny the Frenchman.
And despite being second best in the first 20, United snatched their first opportunity to edge in front.
Ben Osborn’s whipped cross was only half cleared and Rhian Brewster’s persistence found McGoldrick in space and the Irishman smashed past Robert Sanchez.
But despite that, Brighton did continue to edge it again after the break with Ramsdale once again denying Maupay and Jakub Moder’s strike ruled out by VAR.
And United continued to live a charmed life late on as Maupay missed another golden chance and Ramsdale flew to rescue to deny Jose Izquierdo.
Full Time from Bramall Lane it’s Sheffield United 1 Brighton 0
