The apprentice has defeated the master as Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal has knocked Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City out of the FA Cup.

A goal in either half from Gunners skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured a place in the final for Arsenal, as City’s FA Cup defence comes to an end.

City had all the ball in the opening stages, but the cutting edge of Arsenal proved decisive as Aubameyang fired them ahead on 19 minutes.

Nicolas Pepe’s cross into the box was not cleared, and Aubameyang stole in behind Kyle Walker to tuck home.

City looked a different side after the break, with Guardiola determined to force his way back into the game.

Raheem Sterling wasted an excellent chance just after restart, before Emiliano Martinez produced a brilliant stop to deny Riyad Mahrez.

Guardiola’s side laid siege to the Arsenal box after that, but as the Gunners dug in, there was simply no way through.

And with the holders growing more and more frustrated in the closing stages, Arsenal hit them with a clinical counter-attack as Aubameyang raced onto Kieran Tierney’s ball to make it 2-0.

That goal took some of the sting out of City, as Arsenal threw bodies on the line to seal their place in next month’s final.
