New Year but it’s same old Arsenal as the Gunners slipped to disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester City.

The 10-man Arsenal side had looked set to hold on for a point in the capital but Rodri’s 93rd minute strike hands the defending champions an 11-point lead at the start of 2022.

With no Mikel Arteta in the dugout, his young side showed their maturity with a dominant performance in the opening 45.

Martin Odegaard saw his penalty claims dismissed by Stuart Atwell before Ederson smartly kept out Gabriel Martinelli.

However, the Arsenal pressure was to pay off before the break as Kieran Tierney’s low ball was buried by Bukayo Saka.

But despite that positivity, old habits die hard at the Emirates, as the hosts shot themselves in the foot late on.

Granit Xhaka’s awkward challenge on Bernardo Silva allowed Riyad Mahrez to crack home from the spot before Gabriel was dismissed the two quick bookings.

And with Martinelli missing a New Year gift of a chance, City showed their mettle in the dying seconds.

Kevin De Bruyne’s scooped ball was nudged on inside the box and Rodri pounced to break Arsenal’s resolve.

Full Time from the Emirates Stadium it’s Arsenal 1 Manchester City 2
