Defending champions Manchester City were forced to dig deep to remain top of the table in Saturday lunchtime action as the edged out a 1-0 win over Wolves.
Pep Guardiola’s side played against 10 men for the entire second period at the Etihad but it took Raheem Sterling’s late penalty to finally clinch it for City.
City were frustrated by Wolves’ solid low block before the break with Portuguese pair Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo both firing off target.
However, Wolves made their second half task even harder in added time, as star man Raul Jimenez chalked up two bookings inside 60 seconds.
And as expected, City threw the kitchen sink at Wolves after the break as skipper Conor Coady bravely got back to hack away Ilkay Gundogan’s header.
But just as Wolves looked set to batten down the hatches, City grabbed their one big chance to break through.
Silva’s cross caught Joao Moutinho on the arm inside the box and Sterling kept it together from 12 yards as the England star tucked home his 100th Premier League goal from the spot.
That deflated the visitors late on but more wasted chances for Silva and Jack Grealish meant City squeezed over the line to three points.
Full Time from the Etihad Stadium it’s Manchester City 1 Wolves 0
