Claudio Ranieri goes in search of his first home win as Southampton travel to Vicarage Road

Claudio Ranieri’s second home game as Watford manager sees Southampton make the trip to Hertfordshire, as the Hornets look to build on their impressive win over Everton last weekend.

The Italian boss will be hoping for a better result than he recorded in his first game back in England, when Liverpool hit his side for five at Vicarage Road. The Tinkerman found the perfect response last time out though, smashing five past Everton at Goodison Park to leave his side in 14th after nine games.

Southampton on the other hand have been slowly improving. A poor start has surpassed, and a good win over Leeds a fortnight ago was backed up with a draw at home to Burnley, and an unfortunate penalty shootout defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Team News

One of the stars of Watford’s win on Merseyside was Nigerian striker Emmanuel Dennis, but he won’t be available for the visit of the Saints because he picked up a fifth booking of the season and must serve a one match suspension.

Christian Kabasele is also out as he undergoes rehab on a hamstring injury, while Peter Etebo is a long way off with a torn quadricep.

Danny Rose should be available again after a calf injury kept him out of the Everton game, but Francisco Sierralta needs more time to shake off a hamstring problem.

Kiko Femenia is also doubtful as he continues to battle a hip problem picked up in the defeat to Liverpool.

As for Southampton, James Ward-Prowse is still suspended, while the only other definite absentee is Jack Stephens, who has a knee injury. Armando Broja had an ankle injury picked up in the Burnley game, but should still make the squad after having a week off through ineligibility.

Mohamed Elyounoussi had surgery on his hand on Monday but could still be involved wearing a protective cast.

You’ve got to go all the way back to December 1999 for the last time Watford beat Southampton at Vicarage Road in the Premier League, when two goals from Xavier Gravelaine helped the Hornets to a 3-2 win.

If they can repeat the feat this weekend, Watford could move into mid-table, whereas a win for Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side would see them overtake their opponents in the bottom half.

Watford take on Southampton at Vicarage Road on Saturday, October 30th. Kick-off is at 3pm.
