Southampton hope to get their first win of the season as Leeds travel to St Mary's
After another international break disrupted the early stages of the new season, the Premier League is back this weekend, and Southampton hope to pick up their first win of the new campaign as Leeds United travel south.
Ralph Hassenhuttl is under pressure if reports are true, as the Austrian hopes to make it eighth time lucky, having drawn four of their first seven so far this season. The positives were stalemates with Man United and Manchester City, but a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last time out will have a knock-on effect.
They’ll be without captain and talisman James Ward-Prowse, who was sent off at Stamford Bridge before going away with England, meaning his presence in midfield will need to be filled by someone else.
Jack Stephens is also out with a knee problem, and Che Adams also has an injury that will keep him sidelined.
As for Leeds, a much-needed win against Watford before the break was a relief, as it broke their winless start to the new season. Diego Llorente scored the only goal at Elland Road that day, and should continue alongside Liam Cooper in defence.
Luke Ayling isn’t fit as he struggles with a knee injury, and Robin Koch is seeing a specialist about an ongoing pelvic injury that has hampered his season so far.
Patrick Bamford is also out with an ankle problem, and Raphinha’s participation is also in doubt. Brazil play on Friday night, meaning he will have less than 24 hours before he is potentially required at St Mary’s. After an incredible debut for his country earlier in the week, fatigue may keep him out.
When these two met last season, it was a clean sweep for the Whites. A 3-0 win at Elland Road followed a 2-0 win at St Mary’s, with Bamford scoring in both games.
If Southampton can reverse that result, they’ll stay out of the relegation zone and give their season a much-needed jump start. If Leeds can continue their momentum from before the break, they’ll move closer to mid-table.
Southampton take on Leeds United on Saturday, October 16th. Kick-off is at 3pm.
