Southampton have defied the Premier League odds to secure a battling 1-0 win at home to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Che Adams put the hosts in front after just 15 minutes, and the Saints turned in an incredible defence effort to secure a crucial three points.
City struggled to get going on the south coast, and Guardiola will be disappointed with how his side conceded in the early stages.
Oleksandr Zinchenko’s poor pass in midfield gifted possession to Adams, and the former Birmingham City man launched an instinctive lob over a stranded Ederson.
That stung City into action, as Alex McCarthy tipped Raheem Sterling’s drive onto the post, before beating away a fierce Riyad Mahrez drive just before the break.
It was all one-way traffic after the restart, as Gabriel Jesus, Sterling and David Silva were all frustrated by McCarthy.
City kept up their relentless pressure in the closing stages, but everywhere Jesus and co went, a Southampton defender was there to block.
Urged on by Guardiola from the sidelines, City pushed and pushed in the final minutes, but McCarthy and his defence simply would not break.
