Champions Liverpool welcome winless Sheffield United to Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

Liverpool are still reeling over the loss of talismanic defender Virgil van Dijk, who was injured by a reckless Jordan Pickford challenge in last weekend’s Merseyside Derby.

The frustration grew further when it was revealed the Everton goalkeeper would face no disciplinary action for the tackle which has left van Dijk requiring knee surgery and an extended spell on the sidelines.

Reds teammate Thiago Alcantara will also be absent for the clash with Sheffield United following a Richarlison tackle in the same game.

Boss Jurgen Klopp and midfielder Gini Wijnaldum bemoaned Everton’s aggressive style in the pre-match press conference against Ajax, but no matter how strong their gripes, Liverpool will need to cope against the Blades and for the foreseeable without the injured pair.

The aforementioned 0-1 Champions League victory over Ajax saw Fabinho deployed as a makeshift centre back after defender Joel Matip also succumbed to a knock.

The defender is unlikely to start against Sheffield United, so Joe Gomez looks set to start alongside Fabinho at the back – Adrian will almost certainly deputise for still-injured Alisson in goal.

Liverpool’s injury concerns don’t stop there, with new boy Kostas Tsimikas still out along with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Blades meanwhile have injury concerns of their own, something which can in part be used to excuse their dreadful start to the season.

Chris Wilder’s side are currently second bottom of the Premier League table, with their only point so far coming at bottom side Fulham last week after 4 consecutive defeats.

Jack O’Connell, John Fleck and Lys Mousset all remain absent for the Blades, and new signing Max Lowe also won’t feature after coming off with a problem just 20 minutes in to his debut last week.

Club record signing Rhian Brewster will no doubt be keen to play against his former club after his big money switch to Yorkshire.

Liverpool v Sheffield United is an 8pm kick off on Saturday, 24th October.
