The first mouth-watering top six clash of the Premier League season comes on Sunday afternoon, as Premier League champions Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge to take on big-spending Chelsea.
Both sides recorded victories in their opening games of the league campaign, with Liverpool edging a thriller at Anfield as they beat Leeds United 4-3, and Chelsea enjoying a 3-1 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium the following Monday night.
Chelsea were without three of their new signings for the win over the Seagulls, with Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell all missing out through injury, and all three will be absent again as the game comes too soon for the trio. Thiago Silva isn’t injured but regaining fitness after joining the Blues fairly late in the transfer window, while Chilwell and Ziyech are closing in on returns after knee and ankle injuries respectively.
Christian Pulisic will also not be part of Frank Lampard’s squad, with the Chelsea boss confirming that the American, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Friday, still recovering from a hamstring injury picked up in the FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal. Timo Werner is expected to recover from a knock suffered in the win over Brighton though.
As for Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara might have signed before kick-off but the game will come too soon for him, and otherwise Jurgen Klopp has no new injury concerns to contend with ahead of the champions’ first away game of the season. Mo Salah will hope to continue his fine form, having smashed a hat-trick against Leeds on the opening day.
Jordan Henderson was withdrawn early at Anfield after recently recovering from injury, but isn’t expected to miss out on the starting line-up on Sunday.
Chelsea vs Liverpool at Stamford Bridge kicks off at 4.30pm on Sunday, September 20th.
