The Premier League title race could already be done and dusted as a dominant Manchester City won 4-1 at Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s side overpowered the Reds in a ruthless second half display to move five points clear at the top with Liverpool left to rue a third straight Anfield defeat.
Despite the final result, it was Liverpool who had the better of tight first half hour, as Sadio Mane wasted a brilliant chance to put them in front.
Trent Alexander-Arnold showed great desire to win possession and whip in a cross from the right, but Mane’s thumping header flew just over.
And that little chink of light provided City with a perfect chance to take the lead, as Fabinho’s late challenge felled Raheem Sterling inside the box.
But despite his fine recent goal scoring form, Ilkay Gundogan was unable to take advantage as he ballooned over from the spot.
However, the German international was determined to make amends within two minutes of the restart as he lashed as Phil Foden’s effort was saved.
But with City unable to find a quick second before the hour, Liverpool forced their way back in.
Ruben Dias’ error let Mo Salah in behind and in his attempts to rectify he hauled him down inside the box allowing the Egyptian to equalise from the spot.
And with the game finally poised with 20 to play it was City that showed hunger of champions as two quickfire goals turned the game.
Gundogan showed his instincts inside the box to slot home Foden’s cross before Sterling nodded home after a clanger from Alisson.
And with Liverpool shell shocked by that quick one two, City made the game safe as Foden lashed home Gabriel Jesus’ flick.
