Pep Guardiola’s eagerly awaited reunion with Lionel Messi ended in defeat for Manchester City as Pep’s men slumped to 2-0 defeat away at PSG.

All the pre-game focus was on Messi in Paris and as the script predicted it was Guardiola’s old talisman that tipped the balance for Mauricio Pochettino against Manchester City.

However, the despite the final result, City will be left wondering how they failed to score after Idrissa Gana Gueye’s lashed the hosts in front.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was called into action to keep out Jack Grealish before Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling both managed to skew chances onto the crossbar.

But all credit to City, they refused to go quietly after the break with Donnarumma kept busy by Grealish and co.

However, with City unable to make the most of those chances count late on, and Messi lurking on the break, it was PSG who carried the bigger threat.

And in the blink of an eye City found the game lost in the final 20, Messi’s squirming run took him clear of Ruben Dias on the counter.

A quick one-two with Kylian Mbappe and bang – three points for PSG and Messi is back!
