Everton midfielder James Rodriguez may depart Goodison Park this summer after just a season with the club.
Everton’s James Rodriguez has been dropping hints on his Twitter account about a possible return to La Liga.
Although often not a lot can be read in to a player’s social media activity, the 30-year-old could hardly have left a clearer signal to Evertonians that he’s soon to be on his way out.
Rodriguez tweeted the words ‘Nunca dejes de creer’ which translates from Spanish to English as ‘never stop believing.’ Seemingly innocuous at first, but that term is in fact the official club motto of Atletico Madrid.
The message was also accompanied by an emoji saying ‘soon’ – appearing to suggest that a move to the Wanda Metropolitano is imminent.
James is of course no stranger to the Spanish capital, having played for Atleti’s cross-city rivals Real for 6 years before ex-Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti brought him to the Premier League last year.
Rodriguez is under contract at Everton though until next summer and it’s understood the club will only entertain credible offers for the playmaker before they consider selling him.
With Carlo Ancelotti now out of the frame at Goodison Park, many will argue that the Toffees’ unique selling point when it came to bringing the player to the club has now evaporated.
That being said, Rafa Benitez who was unveiled as Everton’s new manager in June, is widely regarded as one of the game’s better managers and will no doubt be keen to retain one of Everton’s more skilled performers.
However, if James Rodriguez’s social media activity is anything to go by, it looks unlikely that he’ll remain an Everton player beyond the 31st August transfer deadline.
