New Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland has been handed the number 1 jersey at Selhurst Park.

The former Stoke keeper, who signed for Palace on the domestic deadline day for £1m becomes the first player to wear the number one for the Eagles since club legend Julian Speroni departed.

Butland was signed as much needed cover between the sticks after injury to Wayne Hennessey, who as a result hasn’t been named in Roy Hodgson’s initial 25-man squad for the Premier League season.

The Wales goalkeeper is expected to be out until 2021 after a nasty quadriceps problem.

6’5” Jack Butland is likely to deputise, and despite being only 27 years of age, has plenty of senior experience along with 9 caps for England.

Striker Connor Wickham has also been omitted from Crystal Palace’s 25-man squad as his injury woes continue.
