Everton’s expected response under Duncan Ferguson has hit an immediate bump in the road as the Toffees lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa.

The Everton legend has once again stepped into the breach at Goodison with Rafa Benitez’s tenure ended last weekend.

But despite the fervour of a loud home crowd, Everton’s problems resurfaced once again, as their relegation worries continue to rise.

Villa did look to carry the greater earlier threat as Emi Buendia and Ollie Watkins both spurned chances to score.

But as the clock ticked into added time before the break, Steven Gerrard’s side edged in front.

Lucas Digne’s superb corner caught out the Everton backline and Buendia stole in to nod past Jordan Pickford.

Ferguson looked to launch an aerial bombardment on Villa in the second 45 with Ben Godfrey kept out by Emi Martinez.

But despite throwing crosses and bodies into the box late on, Everton were unable to make it count.

Full Time from Goodison Park it’s Everton 0 Aston Villa 1
