Southampton will be looking to build on an impressive 3 points against Manchester City when they play Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League.
Thursday’s clash sees Saints travel to Merseyside just a point behind their hosts, with it almost certain that there’ll be another year of top flight football to look forward to.
Everton can also breathe a sigh of relief, as much like Southampton, they overcame their own relegation fears which were looming earlier on in the campaign.
The Toffees may have felt hard done by in their last Premier League outing, having lost 1-0 at Tottenham thanks to an own goal in what was an otherwise tight encounter.
The same can’t be said for Southampton, who rode their luck at times against Manchester City, but a strong all-round display and a slice of good fortune was enough to come away with all three points.
Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl couldn’t contain his disbelief post-match, conceding he never felt it would be possible for his side to win.
The Austrian’s triumph over counterpart Pep Guardiola could arguably be considered all the more impressive, considering defenders Jannik Vestergaard and Yan Valery were absent.
The duo are expected to miss out at Goodison Park too, with forward Moussa Djenepo also a doubt.
Sofiane Boufal and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will be assessed ahead of the game, having also sat out the win over Manchester City.
Carlo Ancelotti also has a depleted Everton squad to pick from, with Theo Walcott continuing to recover from surgery.
Long-term absentees Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Cenk Tosun won’t feature for the rest of the season, whilst Fabian Delph is still struggling with a calf strain.
Perhaps most concerningly for the Italian will be the fitness of Alex Iwobi and Mason Holgate, with both players having to be withdrawn against Spurs with injury.
Everton v Southampton at Goodison Park is a 6pm kick off on Thursday, July 9.
