Premier League legend Alan Shearer feels that Everton have a strong chance of finishing in the top six this season.

The former Newcastle striker and Premier League record goalscorer has been impressed with the Toffees’ start to the campaign.

Everton currently sit top of the league having won all four of their opening games so far, and Shearer feels the club are on the right course to maintain their position in the top reaches of the table.

Speaking in a column on The Athletic, the one-time top flight winner said:

“I don’t see them sustaining a challenge for the Premier League, but they’ve made an unbelievable start.

“I think it’s most realistic to see if they can get in the top four or the top six.

“They’ve got a good chance of doing that with the three midfielders they’ve signed.”

Everton’s toughest test of the season to date will come on Saturday, as they welcome cross-city rivals and current Champions Liverpool to Goodison Park for the first Merseyside Derby of the season.

Everton haven’t beaten Liverpool in 10 years, but with the confidence pulsating around the club and Liverpool’s 7-2 hiding by Aston Villa last time out, this perhaps represents their best opportunity to break that duck.
