Rafa Benitez has added some experience to his side with two new faces ahead of their pre-season campaign
Everton have been busy in the transfer market, as Rafa Benitez adds experience to his squad ahead of the new season.
Andros Townsend has arrived on a free transfer from Crystal Palace after his contract expired, while goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has signed from Bournemouth, where he had spent the last four years.
Townsend has just celebrated his 30th birthday and links up with Benitez once again, after being managed by the Spaniard while at Newcastle United in 2016, where he played arguably the best football of his career, despite the Magpies being relegated.
The former England international has signed a two-year contract and counts the Toffees as the 13th club of his career, having spent nine loan spells away from Tottenham Hotspur in his formative years.
Townsend spoke of his desire to improve as a key factor in choosing Everton as his newest challenge, speaking highly of Benitez’s man management as a factor in his decision.
34-year-old Begovic joins after failing to clinch promotion with Bournemouth last season, as Brentford eliminated the Cherries at the semi final stage of the playoffs. He’s vastly experienced, having spent almost his entire career in England with the likes of Portsmouth, Stoke City and Chelsea, as well as a number of loan spells.
The Bosnian international won a Premier League title with Chelsea in 2017 under Antonio Conte, playing the role of backup goalkeeper for most of the season behind Thibaut Courtois. He’s expected to be a backup option to Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park, after Swedish stopper Robin Olsen departed the club after a loan spell from Roma in the summer.
There could be another new face arriving on Merseyside too, with former Leicester City winger Demarai Gray close to completing a deal from Bayer Leverkusen for a small fee.
