Aston Villa have picked up their first win of the campaign as Danny Ings’ incredible strike secured a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
Dean Smith’s side looked back to their old selves as Villa Park looked forward to left after Jack Grealish as the hosts simply overpowered the Magpies.
Neither side created much in a scrappy open half hour with Anwar El Ghazi blasting over from Villa’s best chance.
However, if the opening 45 minutes lacked quality, added time before the break produced a moment of absolute quality.
Matty Cash’s long throw was flicked on by Tyrone Mings and Ings catapulted up to smash a fantastic bicycle kick.
But as superb as Villa’s opener was there second after the restart couldn’t have been scrappier.
Mings’ header caught Jamal Lascelles’ arm after some pinball inside the box and a cool El Ghazi stepped up to lash home from the spot.
Newcastle did almost force their way into it late on as Callum Wilson was denied a spot kick from Emiliano Martinez wild challenge.
But in the end it was about Ings as he should the Villa fans there is life after Jack.
