Aston Villa’s Europa League hopes have been ended as Dean Smith’s side caved in to lose 3-2 away at Crystal Palace.

Villa now need to win their two remaining games to secure a Top Ten finish with Roy Hodgson’s Palace already safe.

Smith’s side did have the better of it early on South London as stand in captain John McGinn steered home a brilliant opener.

That strike released the pressure at both ends before the break as Christian Benteke nodded home Tyrick Mitchell’s deep cross before Anwar El Ghazi smacked home Ollie Watkins’ knock down to put the visitors back in front.

But it was Palace who slowly began to gain the upper hand after the restart with Emiliano Martinez brilliantly keeping out Benteke before Wilf Zaha buried another equaliser.

And with Palace grinding Villa down in the closing minutes there was only one side looking to win as Mitchell popped inside the box to bundle home his first ever Palace goal

Full Time from Selhurst Park it’s Crystal Palace 3 Aston Villa 2
