Chelsea have renewed their interest in French defender Jules Kounde with a view to signing the Sevilla player in January

Following an unsuccessful attempt in the summer, Chelsea have now firmly set their sights on signing Sevilla defender Joules Kounde.

After a failed £42.5m bid submitted which was firmly rebuffed, it is thought the Spanish club are holding out for £60m.

With the list of potential suitors growing for the talented French defender, Sevilla may well achieve their target sum. It has been reported that Manchester United may move for the defender in January which has prompted the Kounde to Chelsea plan to be expedited.

I don’t know how many teams in Spain would say no to €50m from Chelsea, considering that the squad is worth €400m… that speaks of the strength of the club [Sevilla].

Chelsea’s early planning for defensive options is warranted due to the uncertainty surrounding defender Antonio Rudiger, who is yet to commit to a new contract which expires next summer.

Alongside this, contract negotiations with defender Andreas Christensen hit a peculiar roadblock as the Danish player’s camp demanded a 3-year length rather than the previously agreed 5-year extension, which has ultimately brought conversations to a standstill.

The Blues may also need to prepare for the departure of 37-year-old defender Thiago Silva, who sees his contract expiring next summer and unlikely to extend his current deal with the club.

With Thomas Tuchel potentially losing a key characters from his defensive unit, Jules Kounde moving to Chelsea has become the top priority of the German’s list, though a move may prove difficult to complete in January.
