Chelsea have tightened their grip on a Champions League place this season as Thomas Tuchel’s side cruised to a 2-0 win over Fulham.
Two goals from German star Kai Havertz opened up a six-point gap on West Ham overnight as Scott Parker’s Fulham seeing their top-flight safety hanging by the thinnest of threads.
The Blues looked to gear for that all important Champions League clash with Real Madrid in midweek with Tuchel’s side dominating right from the start at the Bridge.
Tuchel’s policy of playing out from the back had the hosts ahead inside the first ten minutes as one long direct ball freed Mason Mount in behind and his square ball was lashed home by Havertz.
And despite Fulham carrying a threat through Ademola Lookman at one end the waves of Blues attacks continued before the break as Alphonse Areola kept out Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
But any realistic chances of a Cottagers fightback were ended within seconds of the restart as another Blues counter doubled their advantage.
Ben Chilwell’s pass freed Havertz in space and he cleverly linked up with Werner inside the box before smashing home a crisp effort.
Fulham did look to make a fist late on but despite Chelsea powering down in the final minutes but there was to be no respite for the struggling visitors as Parker and his players look set for an immediate return to the Championship.
Full Time from Stamford Bridge it’s Chelsea 2 Fulham 0
