Jay Rodriguez's 50th Clarets goal earned Burnley a 1-0 Premier League win over Watford.

The evening started with the Clarets delivering another forceful response to the ‘White Lives Matter – Burnley’ banner flown over their 0-5 defeat at Manchester City on Monday night.

Sean Dyche meanwhile woke to headlines questioning his future at the club as he played down suggestions of a rift with the board.

But it was Rodriguez’s stooping header that earned three big points for his hometown club and kept Watford hovering just above the relegation zone.

The game ebbed and flowed with momentum going back and forth between Watford and their hosts and it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that the Clarets took the lead.

Jay Rodriguez got across his man at the near post and dropped low to head home Dwight McNeil’s cross.

Matej Vydra had a chance to double the lead for Burnley in the 86th minute, only to shoot straight at Watford keeper Ben Foster after breaking the offside trap.

Burnley were grateful to see Adam Mesina head over from a corner in the last minute of normal time – Watford could well have done with the victory with sides around them dropping points this week.

Final score: Burnley 1-0 Watford
