Manchester United have missed a golden chance to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League table as the Red Devils slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side looked jaded throughout at Old Trafford, following on from a difficult Carabao Cup clash in midweek, as the Norwegian racked up his second defeat this week at the hands of Aston Villa.

And with the expected United onslaught from kick off never materialising it was Villa who carved out the best chances before the break.

Some full back to full back play saw Matt Targett lash one over.

Before United stopper David De Gea smartly recovered to keep out Ollie Watkins before the whistle.

However, it wasn’t all one-way traffic in the opening 45 as United skipper Harry Maguire forced a fine reaction stop from Emiliano Martinez.

But much of that positivity was taken out of things after the restart as both sides laboured on towards a 0-0 draw.

However, despite the contest running out of gas late on, there was still time for some textbook Old Trafford drama.

Kourtney Hause got up highest to power home Douglas Luiz’s corner before the centre back went from hero to zero as his added time handball gifted United a last gasp spot kick.

But after some negotiations between Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo the clearly rattled Fernandes stepped up to the spot and blazed his chance a mile over the top.

Full Time from Old Trafford it’s Manchester United 0 Aston Villa 1
