Brentford have begun the New Year with a win as they clinched a 2-1 victory at home to Aston Villa.

On a day of few chances in the capital, Thomas Frank’s Brentford side showed their ruthlessness, to clinch a confidence boosting three points against Aston Villa.

Both sides looked cagey in the opening stages with a chance apiece buried at either end before the break.

Danny Ings netted his first goal since October as the England man eased onto Emi Buendia’s crisp pass.

But the Bees levelled before the whistle as Yoane Wissa powered home an equaliser.

Both sides created chances to win it in the second 45, with John McGinn and Frank Oneyka kept out, but it was Brentford that found the edge.

Emi Martinez parried Mads Roerslev’s thunderbolt but the Dane reacted quicker than the Villa back line to thump home the rebound.

Full Time from the Brentford Community Stadium it’s Brentford 2 Aston Villa 1
