West Bromwich Albion are closing in on the signing of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, with the 20-year-old heading to the Hawthorns on a year-long loan, according to reports.

Gallagher spent last season on loan at Swansea City and was one of the Welsh sides’ most impressive players as they made the playoffs, only to lose to Brentford at the semi-final stage.

Aston Villa were also in the race to sign the Chelsea academy product, but the Premier League new boys have seemingly won the race for the youngster’s services.

Chelsea tied the midfielder down to a new contract on Wednesday, so a loan move is expected to be completed in the next 24 hours.

Gallagher is comfortable anywhere in central midfield and has a fantastic passing range, which suited Swansea’s style last season. Slaven Bilic will be hoping he can provide a similar impact this year, should the move go through.

One man the Baggies will be without for the near future though is Ahmed Hegazy, who pulled a hamstring on Monday, forcing him out of the Carabao Cup win over Harrogate Town.

His place in the squad for the game against Everton this weekend is likely to go to new signing Branislav Ivanovic, who completed a move from Zenit St Petersburg earlier this week.
