Newcastle United’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Friday night has been postponed due to an outbreak of Covid-19 cases at the Magpies’ training ground.

The fixture, which was set to be played at Villa Park, is the first top-flight game to fall foul of the complications of the coronavirus pandemic since March, where the season was put on hold for three months.

Premier League football did eventually resume behind-closed-doors in June during Project Restart, which set the template for the way games will be played amidst the current climate.

Now though, Friday night’s top flight offering has been called off due to a ‘significant increase’ in Covid-19 cases at Newcastle’s training ground, which was closed on Monday and Tuesday on the advice of Public Health England North East.

The Premier League agreed that the fixture was unable to go ahead safely after it was revealed three players and one staff member had tested positive for the virus.

Further tests will be given to the Newcastle players and staff before their next game on the 12th December with the match against Aston Villa set to be rearranged in due course.
